Course Descriptions
Cultural Competency and Diversity (SWK-113)
This course examines and promotes understanding, sensitivity, awareness, and knowledge of various cultures and diversity. Emphasis is placed on professional responsibilities, duties, and skills critical to multicultural social services practice. Upon completion, students should be able to integrate and expand knowledge, skills, and cultural awareness relevant to diverse populations.
Community Resources (SWK-115)
This course introduces community resources essential to social work practice. Emphasis is placed on awareness of and interaction with community service personnel and stakeholders. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the ability to assess critical community needs, identify resources and follow through with a plan of action for resolution.
Social Work Law (SWK-214)
This course introduces the major provisions of social services law, current trends, legislative developments, and court procedures. Emphasis is placed on the interpretation of the laws and court decisions related to various social services populations. Upon completion, students should be able to have a general understanding of these laws and how they apply to ethical practices within the field of social services.
Ethical Consideration in Social Work (SWK-220)
This course introduces the professional standards, values, and issues in social services. Topics include confidentiality, assessment of personal values, professional responsibilities, competencies, and ethics. Upon completion, students should be able to understand and discuss multiple ethical issues applicable to social work and apply various decision-making models to current issues.
World of Work (WBL-110)
This course covers basic knowledge necessary for gaining and maintaining employment. Topics include job search skills, work ethic, meeting employer expectations, workplace safety, and human relations. Upon completion, students should be able to successfully make the transition from school to work.
World of Work Lab (WBL-110A)
This course provides a laboratory experience that covers the knowledge necessary for gaining and maintaining employment. Topics include job search and job interview skills, employment expectations, and employment preparation. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate how to successfully make the transition from postsecondary education to work.
Work-Based Learning I (WBL-111)
This course provides work-based learning experience with a college-approved employer in an area related to the student's program of study. Emphasis is placed on integrating classroom learning with related work experience. Upon completion, students should be able to evaluate career selection, demonstrate employability skills, and satisfactorily perform work-related competencies.
Work-Based Learning Seminar I (WBL-115)
This course provides an opportunity to discuss fieldwork experiences with peers and faculty. Emphasis is placed on discussing application of concepts and principles from related course content to the fieldwork placement. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required in fieldwork experiences.
Web Development Tools (WEB-140)
This course provides an introduction to web development tools. Topics include creating websites using web development tools and web standards. Upon completion, students should be able to create small web sites and upload files to a web server.
Mobile Interface Design (WEB-141)
This course covers current design standards and emerging approaches related to the design and development of user interfaces for mobile devices. Emphasis is placed on research and evaluation of standard and emerging practices for effective interface and user experience design. Upon completion, students should be able to design effective and usable interfaces for mobile devices.
