Course Descriptions
Transcultural Healthcare (HSC-140)
This course is designed to introduce students to healthcare issues related to care of diverse populations. Topics include historical and theoretical foundations of transcultural healthcare, delivering services across the lifespan and caring for diverse persons in various healthcare settings. Upon completion, students should be able to provide culturally competent healthcare to individuals, families, groups, communities and institutions.
Introduction to Human Services (HSE-110)
This course introduces the human services field, including the history, agencies, roles, and careers. Topics include personal/professional characteristics, diverse populations, community resources, disciplines in the field, systems, ethical standards, and major theoretical and treatment approaches. Upon completion, students should be able to identify the knowledge, skills, and roles of the human services worker.
Group Process I (HSE-112)
This course introduces interpersonal concepts and group dynamics. Emphasis is placed on self- awareness facilitated by experiential learning in small groups with analysis of personal experiences and the behavior of others. Upon completion, students should be able to show competence in identifying and explaining how people are influenced by their interactions in group settings.
Interviewing Techniques for Human Services (HSE-123)
This course covers the purpose, structure, focus, and techniques utilized in effective interviewing. Emphasis is placed on observing, attending, listening, responding, summarizing and documenting with instructor supervision. Upon completion, students should be able to perform the basic interviewing skills needed to facilitate the helping relationship.
Counseling (HSE-125)
This course covers the major approaches to psychotherapy and counseling, including theory, characteristics, and techniques. Emphasis is placed on facilitation of self-exploration, problem solving, decision making, and personal growth. Upon completion, students should be able to understand various theories of counseling and demonstrate counseling techniques.
Conflict Resolution (HSE-127)
This course introduces conflict resolution and mediation theory and practice. Emphasis is placed on achieving compromise and a win/win perception. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate competence in identifying seemingly dissimilar positions and facilitating agreement.
Community Resources Management (HSE-155)
This course covers the working relationships between human services agencies and the community. Emphasis is placed on identification and observation of community resources which contribute to the achievement of the human services mission. Upon completion, students should be able to identify community resources, organize public support, and determine appropriate sources of funding.
Diversity Ethics and Trends (HSE-210)
This course is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding of the role of diversity and ethical considerations within the human services profession. Emphasis is placed on the knowledge and skills in the evolving landscape of human services. Upon completion, students should be able to apply ethical decision-making, demonstrate an understanding of diverse perspectives, and identify current trends in the human services field.
Group Dynamics (HSE-212)
This course introduces the concepts of group processes and group dynamics. Emphasis is placed on essential tools for understanding, participating in, and contributing to group processes. Upon completion, students should be able to identify and explain how people are influenced by their interactions in group settings and facilitate various groups.
Case Management (HSE-220)
This course covers the variety of tasks associated with professional case management. Topics include needs assessment, service planning, referral procedures, documentation, and follow-up and integration of services. Upon completion, students should be able to effectively manage the care of the whole person from initial contact through termination of services.
